My friend who used to live in the same building in Haiti used Travel Berkey with Black Berkey carbon block filters for 4+ years. I did for a year or two before I decided I wanted a bigger one (the Royal Berkey). The filters were cross-compatible so no problem. We were never sick and we never had any stomach problems. So I could safely conclude and recommend Berkey gravity water filters as a fantastic product.

Carbon water filters such as Black Berkey water filter elements are efficient water filters with a long proven track record of effectiveness. Compared to ceramic water filters these new carbon filter last much longer, which equates to more savings. Black Berkeys for their stainless steel gravity-based filtration systems works really well in improving the taste and overall water quality.
Historically silver coins were used by the ancients to purify water. Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and Egyptians used silver to prevent algal and bacterial growth in water during long voyages. American pioneers put silver dollars in their water flasks and barrels before journeying west. I’ve done the same. As a silver investor I not only use silver to preserve wealth but also use silver in my Royal Berkey gravity water filter.
Ceramic water filters are an inexpensive and effective type of water filter, that rely on the small pore size of ceramic material to filter dirt, debris, and bacteria out of water. Ceramic filters such as Earth Berkey ceramic filter and Doulton ceramic filters for their stainless steel gravity-based filtration systems works really well in improving water quality.
Ceramic and carbon candle-type filters are 2 of the most popular types of filtration elements available in the market. Both work on the same principle of blocking contaminants passing through the filters’ pores while letting water flow through. Note that some filters use a combination, while others rely on just one. Also, manufacturers use different materials and methods of producing their filters. Performance may vary.
Doulton's 1800s typical late-Victorian period ceramic gravity water filter. The small inner container is fitted with five porous unglazed porcelain filter candles through which the impure water passes slowly, to be stored in the outer container. Removed harmful bacteria, such as those causing typhoid and cholera, from drinking water.
Gravity-based water filters (offline water filters) are cheap, simple, and convenient way to get safe drinking water. It doesn’t need electricity, pumps, or water pressure to work. It uses gravity. It may be slow but gravity water filters such as Berkey's water filter systems effectively removes impurities from water and improves water quality.
I used the Royal Berkey (3.25 gals. with ceramic filters) and the Travel Berkey (1.5 gals. with carbon filters) in Haiti. I used Berkey’s water filtration system to filter rainwater flowing into a reservoir built under the house. After heavy tropical rains, we would drop half to a gallon of chlorine in the reservoir, “just to be sure.” If chlorine is your concern it definitely filters out chlorine and weird taste in water. After 3yrs+ of use, I could say that both works well. I’m not sick, never had stomach problems and I never had any water-borne parasites.
